What is On The Verandah?
On The Verandah is a west Australian tourism business based in Perth, owned and operated by Rachel Dillon. On The Verandah offers creative workshops and events in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, in Albany, WA, in Tasmania, and other places. Our hope is that during your time with us, you spread your wings, meet new people, make new friends and discover what you're capable of!
Should I read the Terms and Conditions?
You must read the terms and conditions when booking with On The Verandah. You can request a hard copy or emailed copy, or read them on the On The Verandah website.
What workshops are available?
What are the prices?
Prices vary so it’s best to refer to the webpage for the particular itinerary you are interested in. If you are travelling with a partner or sharing with a friend, ask about discounts.
Bookings
Reservations can be made by phone on 0428 254 529 or email to racheldillon@bigpond.com. A signed and returned Booking form and Waiver, plus a 20% deposit is required within 7 days to confirm your booking.
How do I pay?
Pay by credit or debit card or by EFT to our bank.
For EFT, our account details are on the Booking form.
To pay by card, request an invoice when booking.
Receipt are provided for all payments.
What discounts are available?
Discounts are offered on some trips. Discounts are not cumulative. Select the discount that best applies to you and nominate it at the time of booking. No youth or senior concessions are available. The Kimberley Birding trip has a different discount structure and the discounts shown here do not apply.
Discount 1. Couples
Couples sharing a Bush Hut each receive 5% off the twin share price.
Discount 2. Non-participating guests
Your friend is welcome to join the trip. We offer 5% off the Twin Share Price for friends who are not participating in the workshop. Your friend will still need to add the single supplement if not sharing a room with you. Non-participating guests can join all activities on the itinerary except for sitting in on teaching sessions with the tutor.
Discount 3. Returning guests
Guests who travelled with us for the first time in 2019 (or since) receive a loyalty discount of 7.5% off the Twin Share price for all subsequent On The Verandah trips. Guests who first travelled with us in 2018 (or earlier) receive a loyalty discount of 10% off the Twin Share price for all subsequent On The Verandah trips. (You will still need to add a single supplement if not sharing a room.)

Kimberley Dietary Requirements
When you’re with us, you’re either on a Kimberley cattle station or in an Aboriginal community. It’s a remote region with limited access to ingredients you’re probably used to. A relaxing of lifestyle diets is greatly appreciated! We also do not have a chef. Meals are home style cooking with good healthy options. Therefore we do cater for GF/celiac and vegetarian diets but do not cater for anaphylactic allergies, vegan or other diets.
Tasmania Dietary Requirements
Tell us about dietary requirements on your booking form. We will forewarn venues and eateries where we can but cannot guarantee all dietary requirements will be met during this itinerary.
Albany Dietary Requirements
We can cater for GF/celiac and vegetarian diets. We cannot cater for anaphylactic allergies, vegan diets or other diets.
What is the cancellation policy for refunds?
Refer to our terms and conditions for specific information on refunds or what happens if On The Verandah cancels the tour. We recommend you take out a travel insurance policy that covers you for COVID-19 related disruptions.
If you need to cancel your On The Verandah trip 91 days or more from departure, you receive a full refund. Cancelling less than 90 but more than 61 days from departure results in the loss of your deposit. We’ll refund 50% of your tour cost if you notify us of cancellation between 31 and 60 days from departure. If you cancel 30 days or less from departure, fail to join, or leave after it has started, there is no refund.
What about COVID-19?
We aim for a safe and enjoyable experience when you holiday with us in 2024. We'll have our COVID-19 Management Plan in place and have undertaken training to meet Health Department guidelines.
How big are groups?
We’re a small group specialist. Our trips have between 7 and 12 guests.
Can I join a trip if I don't know anyone on it?
Of course! Many of our guests are solo travellers!
Do I need to be a professional artist?
Artists of all levels join our trips however please note that the Judith White workshops are pitched at participants who have an intermediate to advanced level of art knowledge and skill. All other trips are suited to beginner through to advanced.
Can I take my artworks with me?
Of course!
What is the art focus?
Our art workshops focus on preliminary drawings and diagrams, colour, tone, composition, mark making and brush techniques. Tutors will help you develop methods to produce works that reflect your personal response to the site.
Will I need cash on the tour?
It pays to have a little on you for those inevitable times when “the internet’s down”.
What if I have a medical condition or disability?
You must let us know during the booking process if you have any of medical conditions, mobility limits or disabilities that may be relevant as per our Terms and Conditions.

KIMBERLEY FAQ’s
Where is the Kimberley?
The Kimberley is a large, scarcely populated region in the far north of Western Australia. Our Kimberley itineraries operate on a cattle station approximately 130kms from Kununurra and in an Aboriginal community. The nearest airport is Kununurra. The closest capital city is Darwin in the Northern Territory.
Where are Kimberley workshops held?
Digger’s Rest Station is a working cattle station and horse-trekking business owned by Roderick and Alida Woodland. Roderick is a third generation cattleman and his wife Alida is a horsewoman from North Carolina. The station is located on the King River Road near Wyndham. A stay at Digger’s Rest is an authentic slice of Kimberley life a spiritual landscape amongst memorable characters. Your itinerary could include a 2 or 3 night camp in an Aboriginal community.
What is Kimberley weather like?
On The Verandah tours run in the Kimberley during the Dry season - between May and August, when the weather is comfortable for travel. Rain and cold weather at this time of year is very unusual. Dry season daytime temperatures are usually between 26°C and 36°C and night time temperatures don’t usually dip below 12°C.
What is included on an On The Verandah Kimberley trip?
Our Kimberley itineraries are between 5 and 8 days and include all accommodation, all meals (except for a café lunch on some itineraries) welcome bubbles, morning teas, workshop tuition, transfers between Kununurra and the workshop, transport during the workshop, wilderness passes, use of all camping gear (if camping is part of your itinerary) bedding, linen, towel and all activities on the itinerary.
What is not included in the Kimberley tour price?
Your tour price does not include flights, stop-over accommodation if needed, drinks, art materials or your compulsory Travel Insurance.
What is the Kimberley accommodation like?
Bush Hut – Bush Huts have a double bed, small verandah, mosquito net, en-suite, fan, power-point, light, linen. Perks of a bush hut - peaceful, views, adventure, wildlife, an authentic Kimberley experience.
Bunkhouse room – A Bunkhouse room has one double bed and two singles. We usually put a maximum of two guests per room, however they can be shared by up to three friends who want to book together. Bunkhouse rooms have air con, fan, linen, verandahs and shared bathroom. Perks of the bunkhouse - spacious, air con, wide verandahs, close to the homestead.
Tent at Digger’s Rest - Tents at Digger’s Rest Station include a single bed, linen, light, mat, small table. A tent is offered at a discounted rate with no single supplement.

Will I be sharing in the Kimberley?
If you do not wish to share, you will need to book a Bush Hut. The bunkhouse rooms are usually only available for sharing. There is a single supplement for an unshared Bush Hut in 2024 of $300.
Will I be Camping in the Kimberley?
Refer to your itinerary to see if it includes a 2 or 3 night camp. All camping gear is provided including tent, swag, mattress, quilt, pillow, towel and linen.

Where do the Kimberley workshops start from?
You’ll be picked up in air conditioned, four wheel drive vehicles (forward facing seats) from your Kununurra accommodation on the morning of Day 1 of your itinerary. Refer to your itinerary for specifics.
Where do I fly to?
If you can, book a direct flight to Kununurra, otherwise fly to Darwin, Perth or Broome then get a connecting flight to Kununurra. Airlines servicing the region: Virgin, Qantas, Airnorth. The latter services the Kununurra connection.
Ideally you should arrive in Kununurra a day early and stay the night in a hotel. We return you to Kununurra on the final day of your trip. Please select a flight that departs Kununurra no earlier than 2pm.
Can I Self Drive?
If you are planning to drive to the Kimberley venue you will need a 4WD vehicle and two spare tyres. We will meet you at an agreed point and you can follow in your vehicle. If you have a 2WD drive vehicle, or are towing a caravan, we recommend you leave them in Kununurra in secure parking. Contact the Kununurra Visitor Centre on 1800 586 868 for secure parking options.
Are the Kimberley Workshops tours?
Not really. You won't drive for miles each day then set up camp in a new location. By basing ourselves in one or two locations we minimise time spent travelling, so you have more time creating art or wildlife spotting! We make daily excursions to different locations and activities.
Can I bring my own group and tutor to the Kimberley?
You can bring your own tutored or non-tutored group of up to 12 people. Allow at least 12 months lead time - 18 months is better!

Does On The Verandah provide easels and art materials?
For Judith White trips we do not work on easels. For the watercolour trips with Jude Scott and Wyn Vogel, participants can bring their own small one or place an order for a travel easel with Jude Scott via her website. You’ll have a table to work at. Your tutor will provide a materials list before you arrive and you will need bring items with you.
Is there free time?
Most of our itineraries are pretty full but you can often snatch an hour or so around lunch and activities usually finish by 5pm with time to freshen up before dinner.
Is there WiFi or phone signal at the Kimberley venues?
WiFi no. Phone signal, yes, and somewhat unreliable. Signal at the station can vary from 0 to 5 bars. There is a landline at the station and you can give the number to your family or friends for contacting you in an emergency. Digger’s Rest landline (08) 9161 1029.
Is the Kimberley water safe to drink?
Absolutely – it’s rain water. Please don’t bring bottled water – there’s no recycling and all that plastic (even glass) creates headaches for us! You’ll be shown where to fill your water bottles on arrival.
Can I wash clothes?
There are washing machines at the station. See a staff member with $5 per load.
Are there crocodiles in the Kimberley?
All bodies of water in the Kimberley should be considered potential habitat for crocodiles and treated with extreme caution. Swimming places are very rare. As a general rule, stay out of the water, well away from the edge and do not walk on grassy riverbanks.
Can I extend my Kimberley stay?
You can extend your stay if there is accommodation available. Please speak with Alida at Digger’s Rest to extend your stay (08) 9161 1029. We ask that you stay on after the workshop rather than arrive early.

What do I need to bring to the Kimberley?
- Your personal COVID-19 preparedness pack (P2 masks, hand sanitiser, RAT tests, painkillers, cold and flu tablets etc.)
- A good headlamp and/or compact torch. (A headlamp means you can hike in low light with your hands free to carry gear)
- Protect from heat, UV and insect bites with a wide brim hat and light cotton, long sleeve shirts with collars you can turn up. (There are several mosquito-borne viruses in Western Australia)
- Shorts, and cool long pants or jeans (good protection against prickly bushes and insects in evenings)
- Sturdy, closed footwear (this is spinifex country, sandals = ouch!)
- Bathers, quick dry travel towel
- Warm clothing for evenings around the fire - jacket, shirts you can layer. It can get cool at night
- One or two sturdy, re-fillable drinking water bottles (at least 1L in total)
- Sunglasses, sunscreen, personal toiletries. Also handy - insect repellant, anti-itch cream, antihistamines, a few sachets of powdered electrolytes
- Sufficient supply of your medication. (Place medication requiring refrigeration in a Zip-lock bag and mark clearly with your name)
- Camera, spare batteries, charger
- Art guests - your art supplies – refer to the list from your tutor
- A back pack or similar sized bag for day use. (Art guests - calico shoulder bags are good for art gear and lie flat in luggage)
- Small amount of washing powder
Does On The Verandah provide easels and art materials?

Are there crocodiles in the Kimberley?
All bodies of water in the Kimberley should be considered potential habitat for crocodiles and treated with extreme caution. Swimming places are very rare. As a general rule, stay out of the water, well away from the edge and do not walk on grassy riverbanks.
