My On The Verandah Photographic Adventure (and it truly was an adventure) will be in my memory for a long time. Kununurra has been on my “must visit” list for many years, and to combine a tourist experience with the Photography aspect couldn’t have been a better way to achieve my goal.

Kimberley Photography Workshop
2019 PHOTOGRAPHY ADVENTURE with Bewley Shaylor
MAY 11 - 17, 2019.
Our sincerest apologies - we have had to cancel this trip due to low numbers. (Regards, Rachel, 12/02/2019)
This Kimberley workshop is based at Digger's Rest Station in the east Kimberley, 130 kms from Kununurra. You'll travel the region in comfort, venturing off the beaten track into wilderness areas not open to the public, exploring deep into the landscape, having unique experiences and meeting colourful characters. You'll have your own comfortable Bush Hut or Bunkhouse room to retreat to each evening and spend a night camping out to take advantage of the vast night sky.
What is it?
A 7 day Adventure for photographers of all levels. Bewley Shaylor is a professional photographer, photography teacher and filmmaker. He will help you with camera technique, guide you through digital editing, helping you to get the best out of your camera gear and create stunning images.
What will you learn?
Our tutors are experts in their fields with infectious enthusiasm and commitment. The workshops are fun, non-competitive and supportive. Bewley is a patient and understanding instructor who will help you build camera skill by getting you out in the field taking shots, experimenting with your camera to see what it can really do. You'll benefit from Bewley's years of industry experience as he shares tricks of the trade around photo editing, light and composition. Enjoy five days tuition over numerous locations and via fun activities.
This trip is ideal for you if you -
1. Have recently taken up photography and want to learn what you and your camera can do.
2. Are an intermediate photographer wanting to expand camera and post-production techniques.
3. Are a confident photographer keen to tag along and access unique locations off the tourist trail.
4. Are an adventurous traveller/occasional photographer looking for an authentic experience of the Australian outback;
5. Are an animal and nature lover, have a good sense of humour and enjoy seeking out new places and meeting people.
What will you be photographing?
Great locations are in easy reach of the station, meaning less time traveling, more time shooting. You'll have time to extend your skills and capture the unique imagery of the Kimberley. Things to try while you are here:-
About your tutor - Bewley Shaylor
Bewley has been with On The Verandah since the very start when we tentatively ran Kimberley workshops with just two or three people. He is popular with guests because he has a way of making them feel at ease whatever their skill level.
A veteran of three solo exhibitions and several group shows, Bewley combines a love of photographing people within their environment with a passion for light and composition. His images are published in several books and he directed and shot a short film which screened internationally. As chief photographer for FORM Bewley has photographed the Spinifex Hill Mob; the Silo Project; Worn Land; The Core; Dutch cloud-artist Berndnaut Smilde and various street art projects.
Escape the winter -
The typical East Kimberley weather in May features an average daytime maximum of 33.5 degrees and average overnight minimum of 20.6 degrees. May is end of the wet season so a shower is possible but becoming less likely, and humidity may be high. The benefits of being here at this time relates to water - more water around means more birds, more greenery, opportunities for reflections etc.
Not just Photography -
The itinerary includes complimentary welcome champagne, time to fish for barramundi, visit aboriginal art, meet the locals, hike, billabong swim, final night party. (Champagne sunset horse rides are available for experienced riders for an additional charge.)
