Drawn by Nature: Earth, Air, Water, Fire
A unique week-long art retreat in the heart of the Kimberley, where we’ll explore expressive drawing and painting inspired by the elemental forces of earth, air, water, and fire. This is a workshop for artists looking to loosen up and experiment with expressive mark-making, try creative, unconventional approaches and work with and from nature using handmade drawing tools, charcoal and a range of mediums. Explore mark making with landscape, birds and nature with your tutor Jody Graham.

Explore a remote, authentic corner of Australia and gain a renewed sense of creativity and meaningful connectedness as you travel through
one of Australia's last true wildernesses. A 7 day (6 night) itinerary, in the Kimberley region of northern Western Australia, this workshop is ideal for intermediate and experienced artists looking to loosen and deepen their practice.

Workshop Highlights:
  • Expressive drawing and painting with natural and mixed media
  • Explore and respond to the four elements: earth, air, water, fire
  • Make your own drawing tools using found materials
  • Work with natural pigments like soil, ash, and water from the land
  • Daily inspiration from birds, animal tracks, light and sound
  • Create a personal body of work over the week

What will you learn?
As a site-responsive artist, my work is shaped by direct experience and the stories found in the land, this retreat invites you to do the same.
We’ll gather pigment, inspiration, and physical marks from the earth; draw with charcoal created by fire; use breath, birdsong, and the sounds of the environment to guide our gestures; and invite water — rain or dam, to leave its imprint on the page. You'll create your own tools, sketch outdoors at dawn and dusk, and respond to birds, animal tracks, shifting skies, and the sensory depth of the landscape.

Fitness
The Kimberley environment is challenging for many reasons, not least the heat. You'll need to be a devoted hat-wearer and water-drinker and be stable on your feet over rugged, loose terrain.

Escape winter
June and July are peak DRY season in the East Kimberley with maximum temperatures that could reach 36 degrees but usually sit between 28 and 33. Overnight temps average 16 but could dip as low as 10. It is the dry season so rain is possible, but uncommon.
